Top Doubles Seeds Advance To Beijing Semi-finals

Henri Kontinen and John Peers booked their spot in the semi-finals of the China Open in Beijing with a 7-5, 7-6(6) victory over Rohan Bopanna and Pablo Cuevas on Thursday.
The Finnish-Australian duo are already assured of their place at the year-end Nitto ATP Finals in London, where they are defending champions. This week, they are chasing their third tour-level title of the year, to add to victories at the Australian Open – their first Grand Slam title – and Washington. Peers and Kontinen are also into their eighth ATP World Tour semi-final of the season.
They will next face Mischa Zverev and Paolo Lorenzi, who squeaked by wild cards Juan Martin del Potro and Leonardo Mayer, 6-4, 7-6(5). The German-Italian pairing had only played together once before this week at the tour-level — earlier this year in Marrakech — where they lost in the first round. Before that, they played two ATP Challenger Tour events together in 2011.
But nevertheless, the ATP World Tour veterans are into the semi-finals after saving two set points in the second set against the Argentinians.
John Isner and Jack Sock will take on Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in the other semi-final Friday. The Colombians, who eliminated second-seeded Marcelo Melo and Lukasz Kubot in the first round, are competing in their ninth tour-level semi-final of 2017. They are also on the bubble in the Race To London, currently slotted in 12th place, 345 points behind eighth.
